NHS Orthodontic Treatments
NHS orthodontic care is available for children and teens with moderate to severe dental problems. Assessment is needed to see if your child is eligible.
Orthodontic care available on the NHS
NHS Orthodontic treatment aims to improve oral health for children and teenagers who show a clear clinical need. Not every case qualifies for NHS-funded braces. Only those with moderate to severe orthodontic problems may receive treatment. After an assessment, the dentist decides if your child meets the NHS Standards.
The NHS covers a limited range of braces. Metal fixed braces are the standard option, which stay in place throughout the treatment. Less visible ceramic braces and clear aligners are not covered, but can be arranged privately at Milngavie Orthodontics.
Common questions about our NHS cover
Parents often have questions about NHS orthodontic care. Here are answers to the questions we hear most in our practice.
A dentist must examine your child first. They use the NHS grading system during an assessment. Only a dentist or registered specialist orthodontist can decide if dental problems are serious enough for NHS treatment.
No. The standard NHS-funded brace is the fixed metal type. More discreet options, like clear ceramic braces or brands such as Invisalign, are only offered privately. Your dentist can advise what’s available through the NHS and what is best for your child.
Grade 3 can be a grey area. These cases usually show moderate problems but do not always meet the threshold for NHS treatment. If you want to seek help for your child’s teeth at this stage, private care is an option. Your dentist will review this with you in detail.
If you have questions about the assessment or do not agree with the grading, speak with your dentist. They can explain more about the NHS criteria and, if needed, discuss how to get another review or explore private treatment plans.
For patients who qualify for NHS treatment, we require your dentist to refer you to us.

If your child qualifies for NHS-funded treatment, we will arrange a consultation with you and your child, if appropriate. The type of brace will be discussed, and the treatment will begin at the right time for your child’s dental development. If your child does not qualify, you can still choose private treatments with advice from your dentist.
If treatment is worn as prescribed, NHS orthodontic care is very effective. Success depends on following instructions and wearing retainers after the braces come off to keep the teeth in their new position.
Yes. No matter how well the treatment works, all patients need to wear a retainer after braces to keep teeth in their new positions. Your orthodontist will show you how to look after the retainer and will provide all necessary follow up.
